About the ride
Centered in the historic city of Chatham, the route utilizes a 4-petal cloverleaf design, allowing riders the rare logistical comfort of returning to the same start/finish control at the Tim Horton's / Comfort Inn after each of the four distinct days.
Petal 1: The Eastern Lake Erie Loop
The journey begins by heading east from Chatham, plunging into the heart of the Carolinian forest and the agricultural soul of Elgin County. Riders will navigate the high bluffs overlooking Lake Erie, passing through Wallacetown and St. Thomas. Keep a sharp lookout for the massive Jumbo the Elephant statue and the historic rail bridges of the area. The loop features the scenic "Sand to Surf" stretch near Erieau and Rondeau Provincial Park, where the freshwater horizon defines the ride.
Petal 2: The Northern Huron & Blue Water Loop
The second petal strikes north toward the turquoise waters of Lake Huron and the international border. This leg takes you to the vibrant summer atmosphere of Grand Bend before cutting west to Sarnia. A highlight of this loop is the St. Clair River Parkway, where you can pace yourself against the massive ocean-bound freighters navigating the narrow channel. The return trip winds through the "Glass Town" of Wallaceburg and the historic oil-heritage sites of Petrolia.
Petal 3: The Far Western Essex Loop
Heading into the far west, this petal explores the deepest reaches of the "Banana Belt." This leg is a coastal masterpiece, circumnavigating the shoreline of Lake St. Clair through Lighthouse Cove and Tecumseh before reaching the Detroit River at Lasalle. Riders will then trace the southernmost coast of Canada through Colchester and Kingsville, with a mandatory stop at the tropical paradise of Colasanti's Tropical Gardens before returning through the flat, fertile plains of the interior.
Petal 4: The Near Western St. Clair Loop
The final petal is a closer western loop that reinforces the maritime and marshland character of the region. This leg focuses on the wetlands and waterways of the St. Clair delta, taking riders through the birding havens of the St. Clair National Wildlife Area and the fishing village of Mitchell’s Bay. It is a rhythmic, wind-swept finale designed to keep the legs moving over fast, flat terrain, leading you back to the final finish line in Chatham to complete the full 1,200 km odyssey.
